I’m not afraid of the kissing monster
I’m not afraid of the clapping monster, I’m not afraid at all
I’m not afraid of the clapping monster, I’m not afraid at all
Spoken (And he goes)  q q h | q q h| q q q q| w |
                                           q q h | q q h| q q q q| w |
I’m not afraid of the humming monster, I’m not afraid at all
I’m not afraid of the humming monster, I’m not afraid at all
And he goes (repeat rhythm while humming)
I’m not afraid of the whistling monster, I’m not afraid at all
I’m not afraid of the whistling monster, I’m not afraid at all
And he goes (repeat rhythm while whistling)
Usually I make a big deal of how brave the children have been, then I say “There is one monster left and he is really scary.  Try to be really brave by not letting this monster know you are scared”
I’m not afraid of the kissing monster, I’m not afraid at all
I’m not afraid of the kissining monster, I’m not afraid at all
And he goes (Repeat rhythm while kissing)
I point out that some kids were afraid because they went “oooh or gross”

Witch's Brew

Witch's Brew is one of my favorite games to play with the kids around Halloween time.

To play you need the cards below and some candy for reward.

Students pick a card and perform the rhythm.  For fun, I have a big, plastic cauldron for the kids to pick the cards out of.  The students perform the rhythm any way you choose: counting, pointing, clapping, tapping, etc. . .

If the student picks a witch card they get a piece of candy.  I have included some fun seasonal words to say the rhythms with as well.

Level One contains Quarter notes, Half notes, Dotted Half notes, Whole notes and Quarter Rests
Level Two adds in Eighth notes
NEW LEVEL THREE! adds Dotted Quarter notes

Another fun trick I like to use is getting a fake witch's finger to point to the rhythms.

Halloween Music Games

Halloween Music Games Vol.1

I have been working hard on putting together a great resource just in time for Halloween.  The packet contains games that focus on rhythm, note recognition, keyboard recognition, key signatures and music concepts.

This packet contains great games focused around the spooky season of Halloween.  Teachers will love the "Witch's Spell," where kids are spellbound to perform rhythms in all kinds of wacky ways.  "Monster Tag" is a favorite for students.  They have so much fun, they forget their learning.  Other great games included are "Lonely Ghost," "Match the Cat" and "Don't Eat Jack!"

Witch's Brew Game Level Two

Here is a great game around Halloween Time.: Witch's Brew Game.

I plan on picking the cards from a cauldron and then using a witch's finger to count and point to the rhythms.  The witch's finger is just a fake witch finger you can find at a party store or Halloween store.

Witch’s Brew: Players draw cards and perform the rhythm on each card.  When the Witch Card is drawn they get a little prize: sticker, candy, Halloween treat.
You can keep adding on to the cards you have drawn, making an extended rhythm.
You can clap the cards, perform them on a rhythm instrument or piano.

Another idea is to use some Halloween words to say the rhythm.  For example, a triplet could be "Halloween" and eighth notes could be "Pumpkin" or "Mummy".  I have more ideas in the directions on page four.

Candy Match Up

Here is a fun worksheet for primer levels that have students match the notes to the missing letters.  Download to print, for some reason it is not linking up right to print straight from this page.
